BackgroundIn late 2022, Indonesia witnessed the growing number of atypical progressive acute kidney injury (“AKI”) cases among children across the country. This AKI cases then reached its peak between October (269 confirmed cases and 157 fatalities)1 and November (324 confirmed cases and 195 fatalities).2 It was later found that the growing number of AKI cases among children in Indonesia was caused by medicinal syrups containing propylene glycol substances that in turn contain ethylene glycol (“EG”) and diethylene glycol (“DEG”) contaminants with the amounts that exceeded the designated safe threshold.3&nbsp;&nbsp;As a response,&nbsp;the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan – “BPOM”) is expected to intensify the supervision and examination of pharmaceutical companies and medicinal syrups that may potentially contain harmful amounts of EG/DEG contaminants and to continuously update the results of said supervision and examinations before disseminating them among the general public.&nbsp;&nbsp;That being said, it is important for consumers to be aware of the critical impact of drug use. Therefore, this policy brief will discuss the existing regulations that addresses the standard of drug use as well as other policies that relates to its consumer protection aspects.&nbsp; &nbsp;
